No Substitution for Experience
A clinical pharmacist’s proficiency in pharmacy practice requires exposure and hands-on experience beyond pharmacy school. Through pharmacy rotations, students can take everything they learned and start putting it into practice in a real-world setting.
At Magellan Rx Management, we are a next-generation pharmacy organization that is shaping the future of pharmacy by delivering meaningful solutions to the people we serve. We believe in giving students the opportunity and exposure to managed care pharmacy, while working in an alternative work environment. Students learn essential managed care concepts, such as formulary structure, pharmaceutical pricing strategies, and Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) decision-making. Students are also given the opportunity to attend networking events to meet other healthcare professionals in the industry. One student said, “I participated in meaningful projects and got to attend the Magellan Method event, where I had the opportunity to meet and talk with numerous decision and policymakers from both managed care pharmaceutical and industry.”
Students who participate in our rotation program leave feeling inspired and confident about their future in pharmacy. A recent graduate said, “I had an absolute blast on this rotation and really feel as though I learned more than I could have ever hoped for on a rotation. I was astounded at the number of opportunities I was able to experience and projects I was able to work on. This rotation has ultimately helped me decide that managed care is where I want to be.”
Through this program, students also become familiar with treating chronic diseases, particularly asthma, COPD, diabetes, CVD, and various psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. They learn about barriers to medication adherence for each chronic disease state and strategies to overcome them. Another student said, “It was such a great learning environment to be in, and because of this rotation, I am now considering managed care as a likely area of work post-graduation.”
Our rotation program is a success because of our people. Our MRx pharmacists who lead students through the program genuinely care and want to see future pharmacists succeed in their own careers by giving them knowledge and autonomy to explore different areas and opportunities. This is evident from another recent graduate who stated, “Mark was a great preceptor who checked in with me almost daily but also allowed me to explore the environment pretty freely.”
The exposure and experience students receive from our rotation program is like no other. We help students better understand what managed care pharmacy is, what a Pharmacy Benefit Manager does, and what opportunities there are for pharmacists in the healthcare industry.
